Who is Jesus?

Jesus is the most famous and well-known person in all of history. His life and words have had an impact on society, lasting for thousands of years after his death. But why is that? And who exactly is Jesus?

This guide will lead you through all the scriptures that define who Jesus is, starting with His own words and extending to the words of others found in scripture.

It will also show how Jesus received worship from others, how He willingly chose to die by crucifixion, and how He said that salvation from sin and death was only possible by God through Himself.

Part 1. Who Jesus Said He Was

Jesus clearly claims to be God in the flesh many times throughout scripture. He reveals Himself in various ways that all point to His deity.

This first section will examine the times when Jesus directly claims to be:

1. The Son of God

2. The Messiah and Savior

3. Lord and God Himself

  1. Jesus says He is the Son of God.

Below are verses in which Jesus directly claims to be the Son of God.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16 ESV

“Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.””

Luke 22:70 NKJV

“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.”

John 3:18 ESV

“And I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.”

John 5:25 NLT

John 5:26-27 NIV

“Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?”

John 10:36 NIV

“When He heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.””

John 11:4 NIV

John 11:4 NIV

What does it mean to be the “Messiah”?

While the word “Messiah” means “Anointed One,” the Old Testament scriptures also define that the Messiah would be God Himself. So when Jesus directly claimed to be the Messiah, He was also claiming to be God in the flesh.

Let’s first look at some Old Testament Scriptures that define the Messiah as God:

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6 NIV

“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Daniel 7:13-14 NIV

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch... And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’”

Jeremiah 23:5–6 ESV

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

Micah 5:2 NIV

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple...”

Malachi 3:1

“The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.’”

Psalm 110:1
